Washington, D.C.--The Internet Safety Technical Task Force (ISTTF) and Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University submitted their report, "Enhancing Child Safety and Online Technologies: Final Report of the Internet Safety Task Force to the Multi-State Working Group on Social Networking of United States Attorneys General", earlier today.
"We were pleased to serve on the task force alongside other leaders in the Internet community and to explore the applications of innovative technologies in the evolving Internet world," said Enough Is Enough® (EIE) President Donna Rice Hughes. "This task force built upon the foundation of earlier Congressionally-mandated Commissions to advance efforts aimed at protecting kids online. This was an important next step, and we congratulate the Berkman Center, MySpace and the Attorneys General for their leadership in online safety and for working collaboratively to identify effective Internet safety solutions."
The ISTTF was created in February 2008 in accordance with the Joint Statement on Key Principles of Social Networking Safety announced by the Attorneys General Multi-State Working Group on Social Networking and MySpace in January 2008. The ISTTF examined technologies that industry and end-users can utilize to keep children safe on the Internet. The bulk of the Task Force's attention concentrated on issues concerning harmful content, such as pornography, and harmful contact, including cyber bullying and sexual predation. The solutions considered included a broad range of technology tools and services. The Task Force also recognized the importance of social norms, law, policy, and market factors -- and considered technology-based solutions within the context of these other types of solutions.
Enough Is Enough®'s mission is to make the Internet safer for children and families and has been a leading force on Internet safety issues since 1994. Mrs. Hughes was a member of the Child Online Protection Act (COPA) Commission formed to examine technological solutions to protect children online, and she also served as co-chair of the COPA Hearings on filtering/ratings/labeling technologies and technical solutions to protect children.
